Keeping a watchful eye on your home when you are not there has never been easier. While there are many security systems on the market, most are tailored for the outdoors.
However, when it comes to the indoors the options slim down somewhat. The Next indoor, wireless camera is fast and easy to set up and you can receive alerts and notifications on your phone, so you can see what is happening as it is happening. From protecting your property to keeping an eye on the kids, Nest cameras are the perfect way to provide that all seeing eye to your home.
Nest products in general and the Nest camera in specific use Bluetooth technology to communicate with your smart devices. In addition, the Nest Camera can communicate to your home PC or laptop through your Wi/Fi network. However, you have to set up each independently. Meaning if you are wanting to use your Nest on your phone and computer, there are different procedures that have to be undertaken. So we will start with the smart devices. To do so, make sure you Bluetooth is enabled on your smart device.
Create Or Log Into Your Account
After you have downloaded the Nest app for your device, you need to create a Nest account. If you already have a Nest product, you should already have a Nest account and in such a case just log in. Once this is done, open your application and log into your Nest Account and click Add Product.
Add Your Camera
If you already have a Nest product, then you will go to your profile and click Add Product. If this is a new account, then you will select the Add New. Importantly, you can have more than one camera as they are stored by serial number.
Scan The Code
The Nest Camera should have a QR code on the bottom. After you have selected either Add Product or Add New, all you have to do is scan the code and the camera’s information will be input into the application. If the QR code is missing or your device has trouble reading the code, you can type in the serial number.
At this point, the application will ask you to put in your Wi/Fi password and you will need to select your specific network that exists in your home. Even if you are not planning on using the Wi/Fi to check the camera, the camera will occasionally need to connect in order to download updates or to connect to any additional service from Nest that you have purchased.
Place Your Camera
Now you should be ready to place your camera. Make sure that where you place the camera is within reach of a power outlet, as the camera must have power to function. The optimal location is where the camera can see all or the majority of the room. It is also recommended that the camera is placed higher, such as on a book shelf or other object, in order to potentially capture the widest possible area.
Connect To the Wi/Fi
At this point, all that is left is connecting to your Wi/Fi from within the application. The camera will begin searching for a list of networks and all you need to do is select which one is yours and off you go. Importantly, it can take your camera a couple of minutes to complete a full scan of available networks.
For connection via a PC or laptop, the procedures are very similar. You need the Nest program installed on your computer and follow the same basic steps above. The difference is that you can connect the camera to your computer via the included USB cable and operate it as a separate USB device instead of using any of the wireless connectivity options. If this is the case, plug in the camera via USB and follow all onscreen prompts to have your camera work with your operating system.
Things To Remember
There are a few things to keep in mind. One is only use the included USB cable and power adapter that came with your camera. Do not use any aftermarket cables as these can damage your camera. Use the Nest camera indoors and keep it away from direct sunlight as this can damage the camera exterior as well as the internal components. Be sure to keep all cables aware from small children.
A Nest Camera is a great way to keep an eye on things when you are busy in other locations. Perfect for vacations and more, the Nest Camera and related products are designed to enhance the way we live, work and play.
